5 Tips From a Photographer on Planning the Perfect Proposal

Got the ring and ready to pop the question? Here’s 5 tips from a photographer’s perspective for planning your proposal!

1. Think about your partner and what they would like best in the moment, something private and intimate, a grand gesture, or something that involves celebrating with their family and friends? There’s no right or wrong. Some people want to go back to a sentimental location, the place that they had their first date, and others want a picturesque view. If you are unsure, you can always ask your photographer for their perspective on some locations you have in mind.

2. Keep the ring safe! Make sure the ring is easily accessible to you, but also secure. Sometimes the ring box can be a little hard to discretely fit in your pocket. If that’s the case, there are options such as flat boxes or even socks with a zipper pocket on the side you can purchase to make things easier.

3. Be flexible. If you’ve planned out the schedule and your significant other is moving slower than you planned it can definitely increase your anxiety. Whenever I book proposals, I schedule time to be in place early and plan for a bit of a wait. We can also temporarily share phone locations so I can keep an eye on how far you are out without you having to text updates and you don’t have to stress, knowing right where I’m waiting.

4. Don’t rush it. Take a deep breathe and get down on one knee. It doesn’t matter which one, but it can be helpful ahead of time to practice reaching for the ring so you know where to stash it. If they are truly surprised your partner might need a moment to process what is happening. They might lean down to hug you, they might hold out their hand for the ring, or they might be so excited that they forget to say yes. I’ll be there capturing the whole thing so you can just focus on being in the moment.

5. Leave some time after for us to take some quick photos. My proposal packages don’t just include the photos of you popping the question, but a quick mini-session after to celebrate your engagement. I also include expedited editing so you can expect a text from me later that day with a preview to share with your family and friends.

Whatever your plan, if you want photos of the moment to look back on, let’s connect!
